So that being said, what is the best clutch that has an OEM feel and noise level using the DMFW that can handle stage 3 power levels. When I first installed it I had to lengthen the slave rod to get it to completely disengage. Which honestly I'm glad to see this, because from the day that I installed the clutch on the car I hated it. I mean really hated it. The only thing that is a mystery is why and how it happened. I was picking up a buddy at the airport, I pulled up to the curb, turned off the car and put his bag in the trunk. When I got back in I put the car in neutral and started it when I went to put it in gear it wouldn't go and I mean at all. So, I turned off the car put it in gear and used the started to get the car going and limped it home where it sat for 2 weeks until I had time for a teardown. It's nice to have a couple cars. Well, I'm glad to say that it's back up and running. I replaced the CM FX300 and lightweight steel flywheel. I installed an OEM Audi flywheel and a Southbend HD Stage 2 Endurance. It's drives and feels so much better. After the break in I'll post some more about this clutch. As of right now I'm very satisfied with my purchase.But seriously those clutches are either garbage or cursed. (I'm leaning towards garbage). You're probably going to hit a snag or two, and you don't need to add the stress of losing your sole means of transportation to add to your frustration. Then, when you push the clutch pedal, the clutch mechanism separates the engine from the transmission, usually so that you can change the gear of the transmission. In most circumstances the clutch will need to be replaced because it simply wears out over time and mileage. The friction surface of the clutch disc will wear down and eventually cannot grip the surface of the flywheel well enough to establish the solid connection between engine and transmission that is necessary to transmit power from the engine to the drive train. There are other reasons to replace a clutch or clutch release bearing, but this is the most common scenario. Your next step is to remove the clutch's pressure plate from the flywheel. It is held on by 6 Allen-head bolts, indicated by the red arrows. Whichever bolt you remove first, skip to the bolt on the opposite side of the pressure plate next, and then keep criss-crossing as you remove each bolt. For such a critical fastener, these are surprisingly easy to strip, so it isn't a bad idea to have a few new ones on hand just in case. The flywheel has three dowels that locate the pressure plate (two are indicated by the blue arrows). As you remove the pressure plate, be ready to catch the clutch disc behind it, as there is nothing holding it in. You can just see the tip of my finger holding the center of the clutch disc (red arrow). The disc itself is not very heavy (though the pressure plate is), so you needn't worry about injuring your fingertip when the weight of the disc rests on it. The red circles indicate the placement of the pressure plate bolts, while the blue circles indicate the pressure plate locating dowels. The light green circle surrounds the six flywheel bolts, which connect the flywheel to the end of the engine crankshaft.

These 12-point bolts would need to be removed if you were servicing or replacing the flywheel. In the very center is the pilot bearing. Note the difference in thickness between the two clutch discs, revealing the amount of wear to the friction material of the disc. The old disc isn't too far gone; in the real world, if you're replacing a worn-out clutch it will likely be in worse shape than this one. If this surface is scorched, grooved, or otherwise suspect, you should remove the flywheel for resurfacing or replacement. Such tools are not expensive. Check with your kit to see if it is included and if not make sure to include one when ordering. It has the benefit of being sized for your pilot bearing at the end, and sized and splined to fit the center of the clutch disc in the middle. The tool should hold the disc in a position centered to the flywheel as you install the pressure plate. It's best to get each bolt in a few turns and then work the bolts in gradually in a criss-cross pattern. A reminder that these are 6mm Allen-head bolts. At a certain point during the tightening process, the disc will be secured and it will no longer move. At that point you can remove the centering tool. This will ensure that the shaft of the transmission can engage both the clutch disc and mate with the center of the flywheel when we reinstall it. We need to install a new clutch release (a.k.a. throw out) bearing and give a few friction points a new coat of grease. It holds the clutch release bearing in its center (purple arrow). The clutch slave cylinder pushes on the fork at the top (blue arrow), which slides the release bearing up against the fingers of the clutch pressure plate. Push the top of the metal clip through that oval hole. Push in on the clips to remove it. Next to the lever, you can see the portion of the old clutch release bearing that faced the pressure plate fingers, which had broken off and was loose in our car.

The big difference is the amount of wear visible on the now-concave surface that touches the pressure plate fingers (red arrow). The release bearing presses against the pressure plate fingers (imagine that my hand is the clutch fork pushing the release bearing hard against the pressure plate). The clutch assembly (consisting of the pressure plate, clutch plate, flywheel, and throw-out bearing), connects the wheels to the engine of the vehicle. The throw-out bearing, sometimes called a “clutch release bearing”, is a simple yet important component that’s only in use when the clutch pedal is depressed. When you have a bad throw-out bearing, it will affect shifting and can lead to failure of other clutch and transmission components. When you push the clutch pedal with your foot, the clutch release bearing gets closer to the flywheel. This causes the release fingers of the pressure plate to get pushed in. Once that happens, the fingers of the pressure plate push against the force of its spring. This causes the disconnect between the engine and wheels and allows you to shift into a different gear. When the clutch pedal is released, the throw-out bearing returns to its original position where power from the vehicle’s engine once again is transferred through the transmission into the drive wheels of a car.

Common Bad Throw-Out Bearing Symptoms All the components of the clutch and transmission system are important for the safety and functionality of the vehicle. If your throw-out bearing is unable to do its job properly, you’re going to notice some signs of it starting to go bad or complete failure. The bearing may go bad after years of wear and tear or maybe even from damage due to an accident. The rollers within the bearing have a tight tolerance and are supposed to be close together. But if there is too much space between the rollers, then different types of noises will start to be heard. These can include rattling, grinding, squealing, growling, or whirling sounds. This is simply due to the rollers in the bearing wearing out over time and losing small amounts of material. The noise will sound like it’s coming from the transmission area. But if you start to feel vibrations coming from the pedal, then it’s very likely that your clutch release bearing is defective or has failed. More specifically, the vibrations are the result of the throw-out bearing being unable to properly line up with the pressure plate. Your foot will feel pulsations as this happens. If you notice you’re starting to have some difficulty shifting or even grinding gears, it’s possible the throw-out bearing has gone bad. The problem is that your clutch is not fully engaging. This shouldn’t be the first symptom you experience from this problem, though. You should hear those strange noises first. Unfortunately, the lubrication properties will wear down as the bearing itself wears down. The more worn down the bearing is, the harder it will become to depress the clutch pedal. It will soon get to a point where you cannot disengage the clutch. Then you won’t be able to drive your vehicle at all since you won’t be able to shift gears.
