(Experience a wonderful trek in Tibet)

Introduction to Tibet

Tibet lies in the center of Asia with an area of 2.5 million square kilometers. Tibet is also known as the roof of the world, as the land consists of high mountains, a vast arid plateau, and great river valleys. It is the highest region on the Earth, where its average elevation is 4,380 m (14,000 ft). It is an autonomous region of China, and Lhasa is its capital, where the famous Potala Palace, where the Dalai Lamas resided, is located alongside Jokhang Temple. Tibet is a home for six million population where, alongside Tibetan people, people of other ethnic groups such as Mongols, Sherpas, Tamangs, Monpas, Qiang and Lhoba also dwell.

Tibet is a holy land where both the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims are attracted due to its spiritual and cultural values. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva resides in Mt. Kailash along with his beloved wife, Goddess Parvati, who is worshipped for power. So, climbing the mountain is restricted. Buddhists also believe that Lord Buddha had visited Kailash in the 5th century BC. Along the Mt. Kailash, visitors take a short plunge in the nearby sacred site Manasarovar Lake. Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Lake in Tibet are the famous places to travel.

Highlights
  • Mount KailashMt. Kailash (6,638 m) is the most visited place of all time. It is a mountain in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It lies in the Kailash Range of the Transhimalaya, in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau. It is located near the western trijunction between Nepal, India, and China with an elevation of 6,638 m. It attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. The Hindus believe that the Lord Shiva is in Mt. Kailash with his beloved wife, Goddess Parvati. And Buddhists believe that Lord Buddha had visited Mt. Kailash in the 5th century BC. Therefore, it is prohibited to climb the holy mountain. We can only walk the circuit around the holy mountain—clockwise for the Buddhists and anti-clockwise for Bon adherents—known as a Kora or Parikrama (circuit), and normally it takes three days, which is believed to give you peace in your mind and release you from the clutches of ignorance.
  • Manasarover LakeLake Manasarover is a high-altitude, pure, blue freshwater lake near Mt. Kailash in Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. With an elevation of 4,600 m, it is located near the western trijunction between Nepal, China, and India. It has a maximum depth of 100 m (330 ft) and covers a 410 km² area. It is locally known as Mapam Yumtso. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the turquoise lake was first formed in the mind of Lord Brahma, where later Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma appeared here as swans. The holy water of the lake is believed to have the power of washing away people's sins. So, many people take a bath and then do pooja of Lord Shiva in the nearby temple.
  • The Potala PalaceThe Potala Palace is a dzong fortress in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It was the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas from 1649 to 1959. After the invasion, the palace has been turned into a museum since then. In 1994 it was enlisted in the World Heritage Site. The palace is filled with the golden handwritten Buddhist scriptures, valuable gifts from Chinese emperors, and tens of thousands of collections of diverse cultural relics.
  • Jokhang TempleThe Jokhang Temple, or the Ra sa 'phrul snang gtsug lag khang,' or Qoikang Monastery, or Zuglagkang, is considered the "heart of Lhasa.". The Jokhang Temple was constructed in the 7th century by the king Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Tibet. The statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, situated inside the temple, is more than 2500 years old. It is said to have been made in the original Buddha's lifetime, giving it extreme religious value.
